Beverly Hills: Netflix has promoted Bela Bajaria as VP – Global Television, a newly created position, in a major overhaul by the streaming giant. Vice president of original content Cindy Holland, considered the brain behind the original content strategy, is leaving the company.
Cindy Holland, who has been with Netflix for close to two decades, played an important role in the company’s transformation from DVDs by mail to creating original streaming content. Indeed, her departure marks an end of era in Netflix. She played a greater role making Netflix a powerhouse of original content, having worked on some of the award-winning shows.
Bajaria, a former Miss India USA in 1991, joined Netflix as Vice President, Content, in 2016 to lead Netflix’s push into unscripted programming including the critically acclaimed Queer Eye, Nailed It! and Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. Bajaria was instrumental in forging ties with traditional TV studios. She was previously President of Universal Television and a longtime CBS TV executive. She will now be overseeing the entire spectrum of content: English, local-language original series, scripted and unscripted.
Ted Sarandos, the longtime chief content officer who was named co-CEO recently, said: ““Since becoming co-CEO, I’ve wanted to simplify the way our content teams operate – with one global film team led by Scott Stuber and one for TV, which will now be led by Bela Bajaria. Since joining Netflix in 2016, Bela has demonstrated her versatility and creativity – building out our unscripted team and helping to take our local language slate, which is increasingly important for our members, to the next level. I can’t wait to see what Bela and the TV team achieve in the years to come.”
Bajaria has served as President of the industry organisation Hollywood Radio & Television Society.
